Top 5 Tips for CrossFit Beginners at ION

So you’ve decided to join CrossFit?

Congratulations, you’ve just made one of the best decisions of your life!

When first starting out, it’s easy to become engrossed in training and you many want to train every weekday, and weekend, and maybe twice a day.

The classes are fun, addictive, and the improvements will come quickly at first. But this is a sure-fire way to wear yourself out, burn out, and exhaust yourself mentally and physically.

Here are a few tips to make sure you get the most out of classes, and we see you coming back for years, not a few months.

1. Use WODify to track your progress

WODify is a great tool to use to track your performance, you’ll input your weights lifted during class and times for workouts. Over the coming months you’ll see yourself getting stronger and fitter and have some nice graphs to show your pals.

2. Focus on your own workout

It’s easy to get caught up in competition with others in the class, this can help you push and go harder in workouts but be careful to not let your ego get the better of you. Make sure to maintain the movement standards, lift safely, and definitely don’t cut reps!

3. Rest and Recover

The most overlooked part of training is recovery. You’ll see people training multiple times a day, even twice a day, but they will have a greater training age and will have slowly adapted over many years to the higher training load. If you go from zero to 7 days a week, you’re guaranteed to pick up an injury. Start off with 2-3 workouts a week, on non-consecutive days, then build up from there.

5. Have fun and socialise

The community is the best part of CrossFit. Taking part in challenging workouts brings people together, it’s kind of strange, but the shared suffering creates bonds between people that would never have met had it not been for CrossFit. You’ll definitely make some great friends along the way.

If you’re still on the fence, book an appointment for a chat with one of the coaches, and we’ll happily show you around!
